About

A septic system or a private well is a small piece of infrastructure that works quietly under your yard. Most of the time you never think about it. Then a drain gurgles, the water pressure drops or the water tastes odd, and you need to understand what is going on, fast.

Septic Systems Explained answers two questions for every part of a typical rural home water and wastewater setup: how does it work, and why is it doing that. We explain the parts, what normally goes wrong, what an owner can safely check, and when the right move is to call a licensed septic professional, well contractor or electrician.

What we cover

  • Septic tanks, drain fields (leach fields) and pumping.
  • Private wells, well pumps and pressure tanks.
  • Well water quality, testing and treatment.
  • Maintenance, costs and warning signs.
  • Safety around tanks, wells and electricity.

How we make our guides

  • Diagrams, not stock photos. Our guides are built around simplified illustrations that show how a system works. Treat them as explanatory drawings rather than exact replicas of any specific brand, model or local design.
  • Safety first. Tank gases, electricity, well contamination and open covers are real hazards. When a job is not safe for an owner to do alone, we say so plainly.
  • Plain language. We explain the technical terms the first time we use them.
